Our insurance company said we are being sued for more than our policy limit

Your insurance company will assign a defence lawyer to the defend you up to your policy limits. You should speak with that defence lawyer about whether you should retain another lawyer privately for the over-the-limits portion of the claim. For instance, if your third party liability limits are 1M, and you are sued for 1.5M, then your insurer will tell you that you should consult with your own private lawyer for the extra 500K you are being sued for. That said, in many cases even though you are sued for over the limits, the claims are settled within limits. But speak with the defence lawyer assigned to you by the insurance company and see what they think.
